David & Kyle

Dear Expectant Mother,

Hi! We are David & Kyle. We’re from California. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us! It seems like only yesterday, but back in 2010, we met, fell in love, and began to build a life together.

We’re so excited to meet you and begin our family. More than anything, we want to give your child a world surrounded by love, care, and laughter. The choice you are making for an adoption can be a complicated one, especially in such a challenging time. If you choose us, we will do everything in the world to give your child all the advantages we can and surround them with a loving village that will include you, family and friends.

Thank you for considering us!

We met in early 2010 at the home of some mutual friends. It was supposed to be a watch party for a reality show, but we ended up hiding away in another room talking the whole night. Over the next few weeks, we cooked for each other, hung out together around Oakland, and quickly fell in love. Since that first meeting, we’ve supported each other in our careers, built a home together, traveled the world, and got married surrounded by our family and friends. We’re ready to share all of this love and start the next chapter of our family!

A Little about Kyle by David

One of the first things that attracted me to Kyle is his fierce compassion, kind heart and willingness to support others. That and his amazing ability to cook and bake. As a teacher, he always has the ability to show compassion and make others feel overwhelmingly supported and cared for. His students always convey how they felt supported and cared for, while also learning different views and perspectives about the world.

I have been lucky enough to experience this unwavering support for myself. Kyle always makes me laugh, while watching tv, or during our long talks and observations about the world we work in. I am where I’m at today because of Kyle’s support. He gives me the confidence to see things about myself that I don’t see. I am excited to watch him provide this to a child. He has an amazing playful spirit that I know a child will love. I see his face light up when engaging with our friends’ children and I know that part of that excitement is around having the opportunity to share input, knowledge and love to a growing human being.

A Little About David by Kyle

David is the kindest soul I know. He’s the perfect combination of funny and smart – qualities that I know will help a child to grow up to be happy and healthy. One of his best qualities is his sense of humor. He does a great Cookie Monster voice! David is so patient and sensitive to the world. I love our long talks and the adventures we’ve had together. I also love that we can sit at home and laugh together while making dinner or relaxing. David’s capacity to love is boundless. I think this comes from the powerful bonds with his family who have supported us and helped us to grow.

David is profoundly caring to everyone. His life has been dedicated to helping people overcome challenges and obstacles. He was born and raised in Oakland and has deep roots in the community. He works as a mental health therapist and teacher. I see him helping people achieve their dreams with care and support every day. Watching him mentor and teach showed me David’s capacity to care for people. I know David is going to be an incredible dad. I look up to him and can’t wait to grow as a family.

About Our Home & Community

We have lived in bay area all our lives and just bought a new home with a big backyard on a quiet street near parks and open space. We love making our home open to our family and friends, so you’ll always find us cooking in the kitchen or having people over to watch football or just hang out. Our community has lots of families with great schools and social opportunities for children to explore.

Our Work/Life Balance

We both work in community colleges and have very flexible schedules. Kyle will be able to take a full year of leave to bond with the baby and David will be able to take several months at a time to do the same . After the first year, we will stagger our schedules so one of us will always be home with the baby through their childhood. Working as college professors means we can take reduced loads of teaching and take paid leave for a semester or year at a time in the future. Even during a normal work year, we are away from work for over three months due to the school calendars. We’re excited to involve both of our families in the raising of this baby.

Our Interests & Hobbies

We love to travel and explore the world together – as well as our own backyard. We both love to cook and garden and we’re both sports fans. On the weekends, we love to be outside, whether it’s going for a hike or swimming in the pool.

We strive to do good! Being an interracial couple, race and diversity is a constant focal point in our lives. Though we come from two different perspectives, we both were brought up in families that taught us the importance of equality and justice. We are both committed to making consistent and active change in the society and communities that we live in.

Our Holiday Traditions

We love celebrating Christmas with our families! This year, Kyle was asked to be Santa for the first time and dressed up for his niece and nephew. We can’t wait to share our holiday traditions with our child.

Our Family & Friends

We have large, tight knit families. Kyle’s family lives close by, including his parents, brother and sister-in-law, and their two children. David’s parents retired to Las Vegas but they visit often. His sister and her partner live just a few minutes away. Our aunts, uncles, and cousins play a big part in our lives.

We are both very social people. Our community is filled with a very diverse, tight-knit group of friends from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We like to host dinner parties and BBQs and have people over. Many of our friends have young children in their families so we are excited that our new child will have peers to grow up with. We are committed to always living within a diverse community so that our child can experience peers that both look like them and discover and get to know other cultures as well.

Our Thoughts on Parenting

We want to parent our child in an honest, caring way, teaching them important lessons through guidance and care. Our home will always be a safe place for our child to figure things out about the world and themselves. We want this baby to grow up surrounded by love and honesty. We can’t imagine a better way to do that than to have the advantage of an extended family that loves and cares for you.

Having an open adoption has been really important to us from the beginning. Our families have shaped us in such important ways and we want this baby to have a connection to their roots and to their larger family. We want our child to have an understanding of who they are and where they came from as this is what will make them who they are. We both know a bit about having to figure out ourselves growing up and we think having this connection will help this child to have an unfiltered sense of self from their very first days on Earth through their entire lives.
