Heather and Matt

Dear Expectant Mother,

We’re Heather and Matt from Oakland, California. Thanks for taking the time to read about us. We have great respect for the decision you are making and appreciate that you are considering us as a potential family for your child. We hope by reading this letter that you’ll get a bit of a picture of who we are.  We would love to learn about you and your hopes and dreams for your child.

What We Love

  • Meals with friends & family
  • Taking our dogs for a swim
  • Hiking the East Bay trails
  • Visiting museums
  • Travel in the USA & abroad

About Us

We both moved to the Bay Area from out of state, Heather to care for her ailing grandmother and Matt to explore the growing tech scene. Our first date lasted through both lunch and dinner, and we’ve spent very few days apart ever since, being happily married for 12 years.

We love hiking in the East Bay hills and visiting beaches with our two golden retrievers Ruby and Maddie, where they love to swim in the ocean and retrieve Frisbees. Ruby and Maddie are playful, sensitive, and love people—especially kids.

In addition to enjoying outdoor activities, we like visiting local art and science museums. We also love to try new food, and especially to share a meal with friends and family at one of the many multi-cultural restaurants in our area. We enjoy traveling, having been to South America, Europe and all over North America. We’d love to visit more states on vacations and look forward to sharing these experiences with our child.

About Heather by Matt

Heather grew up moving every few years with her military parents, finally landing in Colorado, where she went to high school and college. She has two younger brothers and lots of cousins. Swimming and cycling are her favorite activities for exercise. During her leisure time, she enjoys reading a good mystery novel or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and she loves exploring all that California has to offer.

Heather is warm and caring, always trying to be of help wherever needed. She is organized and structured, which I appreciate as her partner—it also helps make her a great advertising project manager keeping campaigns running smoothly.

Heather loves children, especially their curiosity and boundless energy. As a nanny in college, she learned some serious baby whispering skills and has a natural connection with children. While our nephew visited us over the summer, Heather took him swimming, exploring by bicycle, hiking, and they even attended the Warrior’s NBA championship parade!

About Matt by Heather

Matt is from Rhode Island, where his family has lived for generations. He’s an artist who has been drawing and painting since he was small. His love of art started with comic books which he’s collected since he began reading. This love of comics helped shape his graphic arts skills as an entrepreneur, making websites, apps, and animations for the last 20 years. He’s now focused on making kids apps for tablets.

Matt walks 30 miles a week, which means both he and our dogs stay healthy and happy. His favorite things include Star Wars, basketball (GO Warriors!), and geeking out over computers and cameras.

Matt is patient and thoughtful with kids—enjoying watching them explore and learn. Matt is my rock; he is strong for me when I need it. I couldn’t ask for a better life partner.

Family & Friends

Much of our family live outside California and we visit them throughout the year. We also visit Matt’s lifelong friends on the East Coast at least once a year, including his goddaughter, Isabelle. We are fortunate to have friends and family near to us, too. Heather’s extended family lives close by in Sacramento. We regularly get together with them to enjoy celebrating birthdays, holidays, barbecues, wine tasting, traveling, and hiking.

We also have a special group of loved friends nearby who are like family. Most of our friends have kids, some of whom call us their honorary auntie and uncle.

Our Home & Community

We’ve lived in our three-bedroom home in Oakland for about twelve years. The large, bright, open floor plan is comfortable and great for keeping an eye on little ones. We are only blocks from several playgrounds and fun parks, including Fairyland. We value the relationships we’ve built with our neighbors and love that we are near to many cultural activities in the Bay Area.

Thoughts on Parenting

We share a common moral compass and strive to follow the golden rule. We want to help our child to become a well-rounded person who is expressive, kind, and respectful. We want to help our child explore all the experiences that life has to offer, and we want to enable our child to follow whatever path he or she is passionate about, whether that’s art, music, sports, or more traditional education. We believe that while a child should be given normal routines and boundaries, he or she should be given the freedom to explore who they’d like to be. And, we’ll be there to help build our child’s dreams into reality.
