Dear Expectant Mother,
Hello! We’re Eileen and Joel from the San Francisco Bay Area. We are thankful that you’re taking the time to look at this letter, when you’re experiencing so many emotions, thoughts, and physical changes. We’d like to share a bit here about our life together; we would consider it a great privilege to share all that we are with your child.
We admire your decision and the love it shows for your baby. We hope we have the chance to hear about the hopes you have for you and your child’s future.
Our Favorite Things
Family: Sharing dinner every Friday night with Eileen’s family, catching up, doing jigsaw puzzles and watching movies together.
Food: Trying new recipes and cooking dinner together most evenings at home; exploring farmers’ markets and other food culture around the SF Bay Area.
Travel: Vacations abroad (London is a favorite); camping trips with Eileen’s family; touring American cities; and an annual holiday trip to see Joel’s side of the family.
Music: Playing instruments (Joel trombone, Eileen violin and piano) and singing—whether in church or in the car.
Close of day: A special quiet time relaxing and sharing the day’s happenings. Whether it’s watching the Great British Bakeoff, or bringing out our individual activities and hobbies, we always enjoy each other’s company.
We were introduced by a persistent mutual friend who prodded us until we agreed to a blind date. Almost immediately we were inseparable, and two years after our first date, we decided to spend the rest of our lives together. We are incredibly lucky to have found each other and continue to grow in this loving partnership. We are so excited to share our love with a child.
Whether it be the daily routines of shopping, cooking and tidying up the house, sharing activities with family and friends, or enjoying travel, we love spending time together. The more we learn about each other the closer we grow together—and we laugh a lot. Discovering we could not have a child actually bonded us closer together, and we are very grateful for the opportunity that adoption provides us. We can’t wait to share our life with our child, and to provide love and security within our circle of family and friends.
Our Family & Friends
Eileen has family all over the Bay Area. Her mom, three siblings, and their families gather for family dinners every week. She also has aunts, uncles, and cousins who get together for holidays and trips. Joel’s parents and sister live in Nashville, Tennessee, and we make sure to see them at least once a year.
We have long-time friends in the East Bay whom we see often on the weekends and Joel also has regular “board game nights” to catch up with ex co-workers. We look forward to including our child in these family events and activities.
About Eileen, by Joel
Eileen is my favorite person. She is the practical energetic helper in a tough situation, the good-spirited friend in a down moment, and always the affectionate and loving partner. I know that with her energy and big heart she will be an amazing mother.
Eileen grew up in Oakland, and has worked as a Physician’s Assistant at a neighborhood health clinic there for years. She is very close to her co-workers and loves the satisfaction of making people better. She enjoys home-based activities like crocheting and piano, but she also has to get in her weekly quota of “jumping around” through Zumba or step aerobics.
Eileen’s family ties are in her core. Being a part of her family has been a great gift of our marriage to me, and watching how she cares for her young nieces and nephew has shown me what a great mom she will be. I can’t wait for our child to be surrounded by our loving family and friends.
About Joel, by Eileen
I am deeply thankful for Joel. He has a quiet, beautiful spirit that gives me comfort and security. He is an attentive listener and is always encouraging and optimistic. He is smart, but humble. And you can count on him injecting his quirky humor at the appropriate moment. I know that our child will thrive with his attentiveness and warmth.
Joel grew up in Oklahoma, but landed in California for grad school, and has found a home here for many years now. He loves his job as a software engineer developing programs for the business sector. He enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, building electronics, or working on gaming projects.
I know Joel will make an amazing father. When Joel met my (then) 3-year-old niece, she plopped herself right beside him on a bench with a big smile, and they’ve been best buddies ever since.
Our Home & Community
We live in a two-story hillside townhouse on the Peninsula (about 25 miles south of San Francisco). From the upper story we can see across the Bay. Our neighbors are young professionals with children or retirees; lots of joggers out in the morning and dog-walkers in the evening. There are parks within walking distance, and a variety of community activities. It’s a safe and pleasant place to raise a family. We eventually plan to move to Oakland to be closer to Eileen’s family. Her mom and siblings are eager to help with the baby.
We make this pledge to you: We will love this child unconditionally; we will give him or her the best guidance we can; we will set boundaries to protect our child; and we will teach our child to have empathy for others. Everything else comes from that foundation. Whether we are teaching our child to cook or help around the house, attending church, taking him or her to music lessons, or any other activity—we will be honoring that pledge to help this little person become the best version of him or herself that our child can be. We will make sure he or she grows up in a nurturing, supportive environment.
