Mike & Jess

Dear Expectant  Mother,

We are Mike and Jess from San Francisco, and we are excited for the opportunity to grow our family through adoption. We are grateful for this opportunity to tell you a bit about our family, which includes our two children, Grayson and Calvin. Although this letter is too brief to share everything about our lives and our dreams for your child, we hope it gives you a sense of the fun, adventurous and loving family we are.

We greatly admire your courage in making this decision, and we’d appreciate the opportunity to connect with you. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and learn about your desires for your child. Whether or not we are fortunate enough to be your ultimate choice, we sincerely wish you all the best on your journey.

About Us

With Grayson and Calvin in Maui

We are a fun, down-to-earth and loving family with established careers and a passion for family, friends and travel. We have two sons. Grayson, a curious and adventurous 2 year old, has a love for books, splashing at the beach, and playing with other kids and adults as much as possible. He loves being a big brother more than anything to Calvin, born in January 2018. Calvin is a very calm soul, and is enjoying all the attention and kisses from his big brother. We love being parents and look forward to growing our family even more.  Both boys will be great big brothers.

We met six years ago and knew immediately that there was something really special between us. We were married three years later. We are best friends, and our foundation is built on mutual respect, belief in God, and endless support for one another. Through good and bad times, communication and understanding are key to our relationship, as it will be with our children.

Jess previously ran a small business focused on teaching adults new creative skills, but since Grayson was born she has been at home to be with our children. She now works on a fashion line and does photography, while being a full-time Mom. Mike is a devoted father, and has an established career in the venture capital industry, helping new businesses to get the financing they need to get started and grow.

We are both outgoing people who love to try new things. Travel has always been a passion for us. Some of our favorite trips have been to France, New Zealand, Australia, England and Hawaii. Grayson has already been to Hawaii with us, and we look forward to much more travel in our family’s future. We believe that seeing the world is the best way to understand and appreciate all people from different cultures. When we are home, we cherish our time together as a family. On the weekend, we take a walk down to the ocean, grab a coffee at our favorite coffee truck, then head to the playground on our way home before nap time. Any given weekend may find us relaxing at nearby China beach, over at the Fort Mason farmers market, catching a Giants baseball game or taking a trip into the Wine Country north of San Francisco. We always try and keep Sunday evenings very low key—we’ll either order in or try a brand-new recipe for dinner to share family “together time.”

About Jess, by Mike

Jess taking pictures of others – a true passion

Jess grew up in the Chicago area and went to college in South Carolina, where she majored in economics and played on the Varsity soccer team. She also has a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship.  She studied in London, Spain and Taiwan; as a result, she loves travel and has an appreciation for many different cultures. Jess is a natural entrepreneur—she has successfully started two companies of her own, all while balancing being an amazing wife, friend, and over the last two years, mother.

Jess is very close to her family. Though her father and sister live in Chicago, Jess speaks with each of them several times a week, and we also make a point to visit them several times a year. Jess’ brother lives near us in San Francisco and he is a loving uncle to Grayson. And when tragedy struck her family ten years ago with the loss of her mother, Jess filled the needed role of matriarch. She is the rock of her family; this too carries over in our family of four.

Jess was born to be a mother. She has more personal energy than anyone I have ever met, and based on my own experience after almost two years of parenthood, this is a key requirement! More importantly, she has an endless store of unconditional love. She is amazing with our children: Part teacher, part best friend, and all parts great and loving mother. While I was first drawn to her sense of humor and adventure, I have come to most admire her courage, loyalty and perseverance. Jess’ loss of her own mother has helped shaped her into the woman she has become: A person of tremendous courage, devoted to family, and appreciative of every moment in life. We have so much fun together—she is completely supportive of me and my dreams, and together we make a great team as parents.

About Mike, by Jess

Mike waiting in line at the coffee truck

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Mike grew up as the oldest of three boys, in the home his parents still live in. Mike came from humble beginnings, so he doesn’t take anything for granted, and appreciates each day. Mike’s parents raised a son with a foundation built on faith, compassion, hard work and fun. They have been happily together for 40 years and have provided a strong model of values for our family to build upon. Mike’s parents instilled in him independence and responsibility from a very young age—he started working at a golf course when he was 10. It was at that first job that he developed his life-long love affair with golf. Mike also loves baseball and hanging out with his family and friends. We are lucky to have Mike’s brother Tom living nearby, but even with the rest of the family around the country, we get together every year for a family gathering somewhere in the US.

After going to college in Boston, Mike was offered a position in California helping companies get financing, where he has been for the last eight years. While he works hard, this job allows him the time to spend with his family—which has always been a priority for him.

Mike is hands down the best father and husband I know. Even after a long work day he comes home to his family with a huge smile on his face. Grayson lights up the second “DaDa” walks in the door from work. Mike will immediately scoop him up and take him into his bedroom to read books. Every night he tucks Grayson in, but not before saying their prayers and having a very funny exchange with Grayson’s stuffed animals which always makes us laugh. Mike is the most selfless and genuine person I’ve ever met. He has shown me what it means to feel endless love and acceptance, and he has supported and encouraged me in my every endeavor.

Our Home

Front of our home

We pinch ourselves every day that we get to call San Francisco home. Being from the Midwest, when we look out our windows every morning and see the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge, we are always in awe. We recently bought a five-bedroom home in the Sea Cliff neighborhood in San Francisco, which is low-key, quiet and extremely family-friendly. We made some changes to our home to make it a wonderful place to raise children. We have a gated front yard with a grass lawn. We have plenty of space for kids to run around and play outside and inside. What makes this neighborhood special is how close it is to hiking trails and the beach. We are a three minute walk to both! Since education is an important value of ours, we will choose excellent schools to provide our children with the best opportunities in life.

Adoption & Our Values

We are very excited to expand our family through adoption. We feel passionate about giving our children the best opportunities to experience and understand life through a safe and loving home, a strong education and travel to see other cultures. We feel lucky to have come from such loving and supportive upbringings, and we hope to instill similar values in our children. We want them to be confident that they have things to contribute to this world, and know that they need to work hard and take nothing for granted, and to be humble in victory and persist in defeat, and perhaps most importantly, to always be sensitive and aware of the needs of others.
