Dear Expectant Mother,
Hello! We’re Nicole and Andrea, and we want to thank you for taking the time to get to know a little about our family through our letter. We admire your strength, courage and sacrifice in making this decision out of love for your baby. We appreciate that there are many things to consider when making this choice and we hope this letter gives you an understanding about who we are and what our life is like to help you make the decision that is best for you and your baby.
About Our Family
We are blessed to be a loving family of three. We adopted our son, Luca Aiden, in 2014, and his smiles, laughs, cries, and everything in between bring absolute joy to our lives every day.
We met in 2008, while watching a local band play in Northern Italy and had a whirlwind romance. Just one week after our first date, we became inseparable, and in 2009, we were married.
We lived in Italy for nearly three years before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area for work and are now proud homeowners. Together, we enjoy working in our garden, walking local beach paths, and bike riding, but our lives completely changed when we adopted Luca into our hearts and home.
Luca is now a toddler, 2 years old and growing so fast. He understands and communicates in English, Italian, and American Sign Language. Luca’s favorite activity is playing with any kind of balls, but especially basketballs. He is very interested in babies and always wants to hold our friends’ young children. He gets along great with other kids at his preschool, and especially loves to spend time with his three older cousins. We can see that Luca is going to be an amazing and caring big brother.
Andrea has a great job in San Francisco doing computer programming, while Nicole works in an office and teaches yoga part-time. Nicole even teaches family yoga where both Andrea and Luca come to class, and we get to spend time together with other families.
I grew up in Northern California with two older sisters and loving parents. I am extremely close with my sisters and share everything with them. We regularly meet to go shopping, have spa days or just hang out and play board games. While my parents split up when we were younger, they have always remained friends and they placed great importance on family. Growing up, we talked about our day during dinnertime, and even though we didn’t always live in the same house, we have always gathered together as a family to celebrate birthdays and holidays.
I have traveled many countries and lived in several parts of the world. During my first year of college, I studied in Florence, Italy and had the opportunity to travel around Europe. I graduated from CSU, Chico in 2004. I worked in biotechnology for several years before deciding to move to Italy to teach English.
After Andrea and I relocated to the US together, I did over 200 hours of yoga training to transition my profession to become a yoga instructor. In addition, I also work in a physical therapist’s office, which allows me another means to help and guide my yoga students. I enjoy gardening (especially with my dad), a daily meditation practice, crafting, sewing, and passing time with friends and family
About Nicole, through Andrea’s eyes
Nicole is one of the most amazing women I know. I am really thankful to share my life with her. She is incredibly open and loving. Nicole is a loving and caring mother. She spends all the time she can with Luca. Among other things, she loves to sing and read books to Luca, especially at bedtime. She also likes to spend time outside with Luca, whether going to the zoo (Luca loves animals!) or playing outside in the backyard.
I was born in Italy, in the city of Turin. When I was 11, my family moved to a relatively small town. I loved the countryside because people were friendlier and close there. I was able to bicycle to school, the soccer field and parks. Growing up, I my dad encouraged my interest in both learning and various activities like playing the bass guitar. I also loved watching SciFi and Fantasy shows and movies with him. I also appreciated spending time with my mom learning how to cook. I didn’t learn all her tricks, but I am able to prepare a few tasty dishes.
I got my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 2010 (going to school part-time while working as a software developer), which opened the door to better job opportunities, and made possible the position I have now in San Francisco. We love our life here and we still manage to remain close to my family in Italy. We Skype with them weekly, and we try to spend at least a couple of weeks with them in Italy every year.
I enjoy spending my free time with Nicole, hiking, reading books, listening to music and watching movies (I am a huge fan of Star Wars, Star Trek and sci-fi in general). I am also very passionate about my job, always trying to learn more to improve my knowledge and better myself.
About Andrea, through Nicole’s eyes
Andrea is one of the kindest, most genuine human beings that I’ve ever met and I am grateful to have him as a part of my life. He is tremendously supportive of me. I greatly admire Andrea’s adaptability to moving and living in the US, where he made the transition with amazing ease. Andrea is an incredible father. He spends time with Luca as soon as he gets home from work, and Luca especially enjoys taking walks with Andrea. Together they play with balls (one of Luca’s favorite toys), read, and Andrea has even introduced Luca to Star Wars) .
Our Home, Community & Family
We live in Alameda, California, a beautiful little island, just 15 miles from San Francisco. Although near large cities, Alameda is a safe, tight-knit community, and has a small town feel. Our community many great schools to choose from, and family-oriented activities and events.
We live in a lovely 2 bedroom, Spanish style bungalow with a backyard that is great for gardening, children playing, barbecues, and relaxing. We share our home with two cats, one of which only has three legs! We are also within walking distance of an excellent elementary school, local parks, and minutes from Crown Memorial State Beach, where kids can learn about marine and shoreline life.
Nicole’s family lives nearby and are a big part of our support system. One of Nicole’s sisters lives minutes away with her husband and two adopted daughters. They often watch Luca when Nicole is teaching or when we want to have a date night. We often meet up just so the cousins all have time to play together. The rest of Nicole’s family lives within an easy hour’s drive to our home. Grammy watches Luca every Friday and Poppa is happy to drive down whenever he can.
Our Vision of Parenting
We are raising Luca in a loving and supportive environment, surrounded by loving family: parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. We have an amazing relationship with Luca’s birthmother and birth grandmother. We have regular visits and also regularly communicate through e-mail, texts, and phone calls, and we look forward to learning about the contact you wish to have with your child as well.
We are excited to bring a new child into our family, so that he or she can experience the same loving environment. Growing up with siblings was very important to Nicole, and this is an aspect of family life we wish for our children to experience as well. We hope to teach our children to be confident and determined, while knowing how to really enjoy life and have fun. We speak Italian in our home and along with Luca, we plan to continue to travel with our new child to foster a sense of adventure and appreciation for other cultures—both ours and their own. As parents, we value education, and will do our best to provide our children with every opportunity to grow and develop their fullest potential.
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter. Please know that if we are lucky enough to become parents to your child, he or she will be surrounded by love and support from friends and family. We wish you the very best during this difficult time and hope to have the opportunity to speak with you and answer any questions you may have.
