G R E E T I N G S !
We are Dan and Jenai, and we are so grateful that you are taking the time to learn more about us. We can imagine how hard this must be for you, and we admire your courage and love for your baby in making this decision. We hope that through this letter you will get a sense of who we are and of the love that we have to share with your child. We also hope we can have a chance to connect with you further to answer your questions and discuss your hopes and dreams for your child.
Here’s a Little About Us…
We met in New York over 16 years ago and feel so fortunate to have found each other. We started dating on St. Patrick’s day, 2000 and have been madly in love ever since. We decided to move to San Francisco together only a few months after we met. Everything just felt right and fell into place amazingly. We got married in Mexico City 12 years ago.
We’re both very social and most weekends we meet up with our friends and their kids at their homes or at one of San Francisco’s great parks. Exercise is an important part of our lives. Most Saturday mornings you’ll find Dan riding his bike with friends and Jenai at the swimming pool. We can’t wait to include our child into this active lifestyle with many outdoor fun activities such as camping with other families.
One of our great passions is experiencing different cultures and lifestyles through our travels. In the last few years we’ve been to Australia, Japan and the UK on vacation. We use our love of scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, biking and cuisine to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of every place we visit.
We are both very close to our families, although they are spread far and wide. Most of Dan’s family is in Ireland, while his sister lives in Singapore. Jenai’s mom lives in Mexico and her brother is in Houston. We talk to them a couple of times a week. We make sure to visit them all yearly. We recently visited Houston to meet our new nephew, Luca. We have started traveling abroad with Dan’s family, visiting the south of France and Italy over the last two years. Getting to see the world through the eyes of others, especially the little ones in the family, is priceless and more fun!
We love spending time with our nieces and nephews, and we seem to be favorites as Aunt and Uncle. Jenai wins them over with her drawing and creativity, where Dan is loved for his energy and willingness to play sports and athletic games. We’re blessed to have families who are very supportive of our plans to adopt, and who are excited to welcome a new family member.
I grew up in Mexico City with my parents and younger brother. My mom is from Michigan, so we would visit my grandparents most summers. I have great memories of those summers when we would spend much of our time swimming with my cousins in my grandparent’s creek or in the nearby lake. I developed an appreciation for antiques by watching grandpa’s passion for refurbishing old clocks and furniture.
My mom is an artist, and she was my biggest influence and inspiration in choosing an artistic path. This passion for art and design guided me towards architecture. I got my bachelor’s degree in Mexico City and completed a master’s degree in Architecture at Columbia University in New York City. I currently practice in a small firm in San Francisco focused on residential design. I love seeing our designs materialized into finished houses with happy clients living in them!
I love to draw and paint. Recently I have found joy and inspiration in sharing this passion with friends’ kids and our nieces. Dancing and exercise is a great outlet for me. I also love to design and make costumes for the family for Halloween and costume parties.
Dan on Jenai…
I’m so lucky to have met Jenai. She is fun loving and friendly, and she has a wonderful heart. Jenai is very spiritual and helps us stay grounded. She enjoys organizing fun social events and she keeps our friends and family in touch. I know Jenai will make a wonderful mother to our child. Children are drawn to her—she is always the person that the kids want to play with. She is loving, caring and sensitive, and will care for our child’s every need.
Growing up in a small town in Ireland provided me with a wonderful childhood. I’m the youngest of four siblings, with two older sisters and one older brother. We lived beside my grandparents’ farm, which allowed us to spend a lot of time with them. Granddad had a dairy farm so lots of time was spent helping him in the fields or the barns with the cows. One of my favorite memories is of my granddad bringing my brother and me to the local sports stadium to watch Hurling matches (an Irish sport).
Sports are my favorite pastime. I love riding my bike over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with friends. I also enjoy hiking, swimming and pretty much all types of exercise. At home I read books and I’m generally working on some home improvement project.
I completed a degree in electronic engineering in Ireland and I worked as a microchip designer for ten years before moving into technical sales. Currently I run a North America team of engineers and technical sales people for a large software company. I enjoy my job, which allows me to stay up on all the latest technology as well as work with customers directly. I get to interact with top companies in the industry such as Intel, Apple and Google, which is fun and always challenging.
Jenai on Dan…
I absolutely adore Dan! He is everything I wanted in a partner: Loyal, loving, kind, fun, and with an amazing sense of humor. He is honest, grounded, and seems to excel at anything he sets his mind to. He is a kind-hearted and generous person. He’s provided me with love, security and commitment and has always been very supportive. I am happy to have found someone with the same goals and values. One of the things I love the most is watching him interact with kids. He is so good with them, and kids just love him. I can tell he’ll be an amazing dad!
We have lived in San Francisco for 16 years and are so happy to call this wonderful city our home. We live in the charming, family-oriented neighborhood of Noe Valley, in the heart of San Francisco. The area is full of cute little shops, a Saturday farmers market and great kid-friendly parks. We have a lot of friends with kids who live in the neighborhood and we feel this is our long-term home. With architecture being Jenai’s career and passion we found a great spacious and bright home, which matched our style. We have a bright room, ideal for a nursery room, and are just a few blocks away from Dolores Park, our favorite park in the city with an amazing kids’ playground.
Our Parenting Values
Both of us are blessed with families that keep close ties and support each other. We both learned the values of honesty, integrity, and love from them. We feel it’s important to accept and love people for who they are. Since we were both encouraged to pursue our passions in life we plan to do the same when it comes to our own parenting. We believe that a well balanced life full of love and fun moments is the key to happiness. We want to encourage a strong sense of spirituality and community in our child so that he or she can appreciate all types of people and beliefs. Living in San Francisco we are lucky to have a diverse community, which we believe will be a great learning ground for a new mind.
We wish you the best and thank you for taking the time to read our letter. Having seen the love and joy that adoption has brought to close friends, we know this is the right path for us. We will provide a fun, loving, nurturing family for our child. We want our child to know his or her adoption story from the earliest opportunity, so our child will always know the wonderful way we became a family! We would love to know what kind of communication would be right for you after the adoption and throughout your child’s life. We know whatever path you choose will be the best for you and your baby. We are grateful that you are considering us to raise your child.
